Sweetwater County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wyoming. As of 2000, the population was 37,613. Its county seat is Green RiverGR|6.

History

Sweetwater County was organized in 1867.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 10,491 square miles (27,172 km²), of which, 10,425 square miles (27,001 km²) of it is land and 66 square miles (171 km²) of it (0.63%) is water. The largest county in Wyoming, Sweetwater County is larger than six states and is the eighth largest county nationwide (not including boroughs and census areas in Alaska).

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 37,613 people, 14,105 households, and 10,099 families residing in the county. The population density was 4 people per square mile (1/km²). There were 15,921 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 91.62% White, 0.73% Black or African American, 1.01% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.59% from other races, and 2.37% from two or more races. 9.42% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 16.3% were of German, 15.4% English, 8.2% American, 6.5% Irish and 5.2% Italian ancestry according to Census 2000.

There were 14,105 households out of which 38.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% were married couples living together, 9.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.40% were non-families. 23.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.11.

In the county the population was spread out with 28.90% under the age of 18, 10.10% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 8.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 102.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $46,537, and the median income for a family was $54,173. Males had a median income of $45,678 versus $22,440 for females. The per capita income for the county was $19,575. About 5.40% of families and 7.80% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.20% of those under age 18 and 7.00% of those age 65 or over.
