In the 1996 elections, she was defeated in Hamilton East by National's Tony Steel, but remained in Parliament as a list MP. She recaptured Hamilton East again in the 2002 elections by a majority of 614 votes.[1] However in the 2005 election she lost the seat to National's David Bennett by a significant 5,298 votes,[2] and again became a list MP. In August 2007, she announced that she would retire from Parliament by the end of the year in order to stand for the Hamilton City Council.[3] This she did, but she was unsuccessful, finishing 7th.
She was expected to be replaced by Louisa Wall, the next candidate on Labour's list, but Wall entered parliament as a replacement for Ann Hartley. Dianne Yates gave her valedictory statement to Parliament on March 19, 2008[4] and left Parliament on March 29, 2008.[5] Su'a William Sio, who ranked 47th on the Labour Party list in the 2005 parliamentary elections, became a member of Parliament on April 1, 2008 as the next person on Labour's list.[6]
