Stephanie Chadwick

Stephanie Chadwick

Stephanie "Steve" Anne Chadwick (born 15 December 1948 in Hastings, New Zealand) is a New Zealand politician. She is a Member of Parliament for the Labour Party representing Rotorua. She holds the positions of Minister of Conservation, Women's Affairs, and Associate Health in the current New Zealand government.

Early life

After holding many roles in the health sector, including a term from 1976 to 1986 as union representative for the New Zealand Nurses Association, Chadwick was elected to the Rotorua District Council in 1996.

Member of Parliament

In the 1999 election, Chadwick stood as the Labour Party candidate for the Rotorua seat, and defeated incumbent National Party MP Max Bradford. She has remained MP for Rotorua since then. At the 2005 election she was narrowly returned to Parliament by 662 or 0.02% more votes than her opponent [ [http://2005.electionresults.govt.nz/electorate-48.html Official Count Results - Rotorua ] ] .

Due to boundary changes for the 2008 general election, her seat is considered highly marginal although it is likely she will be returned to Parliament via a high list placing in any event.

In 2007 she was appointed to Cabinet as Minister of Conservation and Women's Affairs, as well as becoming an Associate Minister of Health. [ [http://www.stuff.co.nz/4256884a10.html Winners and losers in Cabinet reshuffle, Stuff News Wednesday, 31 October 2007] ]
