Jan Mikulicz-Radecki, (Gozdawa coat of arms ); (In German- Johann(es) Freiherr von Mikulicz-Radecki), bornMay 16 ,1850 ,Czernowitz (Chernivtsi), Austrian region ofBukovina - diedJune 4 ,1905 , Breslau (Wrocław)) was a Polish surgeon. He was a director of surgery at the Universities of Krakau (Kraków), Königsberg (Kaliningrad) and Breslau (Wrocław).Mikulicz-Radecki's innovations in operative technique for a wide variety of diseases helped develop modern surgery. He contributed prodigiously to
cancer surgery, especially on organs of thedigestive system . He was first to suture a perforatedgastric ulcer (1885), surgically restore part of theoesophagus (1886), remove a malignant part of the colon (1903), and describe what is now known as Mikulicz’ disease.In 1881 he developed improved models of the
oesophagoscope andgastroscope . As an ardent advocate ofantiseptic s he did much to popularizeJoseph Lister 's antiseptic methods. He used agauze mask and was one of the first to use gloves during surgery.Associated eponyms
