Specimens of "B. armata" were first collected at
King George Sound in December 1801 by Robert Brown. Brown published a description of the species in 1810, naming it "Dryandra armata"; the specific epithet is from theLatin "armatus" ("armed") in reference to the sharply serrated leaves. Thirty years later,John Lindley published a purported new species, which he named "Dryandra favosa".A Sketch of the Vegetation of the Swan River Colony] This was accepted as a species byCarl Meissner in 1845,cite book | first = Carl | last = Meissner | year = 1845 | chapter = Dryandra | editor = Lehmann, Johann | title =Plantae Preissianae | publisher = Meissner | location = Hamburg | url = http://gallica.bnf.fr/notice?N=FRBNF37257090&UC=o | accessdate = 2007-09-27] but declared ataxonomic synonym of "D. armata" by him in 1856,cite book | first = Carl | last = Meissner | year = 1856 | chapter = Dryandra | editor = de Candolle, A. P. | title =Prodromus systematis naturalis regni vegetabilis | url = http://gallica.bnf.fr/notice?N=FRBNF37257110&UC=o | accessdate = 2007-09-14] and the latter view was taken byGeorge Bentham his 1870 "Flora Australiensis ".cite encyclopedia | author = Bentham, George | year = 1870 | title = Banksia | encyclopedia =Flora Australiensis | volume = Volume 5: Myoporineae to Proteaceae | pages = 541–562 | location = London | publisher = L. Reeve & Co.] In 1996,Alex George published "D. armata" var. "ignicida", thereby invoking theautonym "D. armata" var."armata". George also refined the synonymy of "D. favosa" to this subspecies. In 2007, all "Dryandra" species were transferred to "Banksia " byAustin Mast andKevin Thiele ;cite journal | author = Mast, Austin R. and Kevin Thiele | year = 2007 | title = The transfer of Dryandra R.Br. to Banksia L.f. (Proteaceae) | journal =Australian Systematic Botany | volume = 20 | pages = 63–71 | doi = 10.1071/SB06016] hence the current name of this variety is "Banksia armata" (R.Br.)
