Originally, it started from the amateur football era in 1985. The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) organised the full professional cup competition from 2005 until now. The competition was named Copa Indonesia during 2005–2009 and was changed back to Piala Indonesia in 2010.
Traditionally, this tournament involves all the clubs from the whole layers in football competition in Indonesia, which are super league, premier division, first division, second division, and third division.
The 2011 edition is initially scheduled to start on late April, 2011.[1][2] It subsequently reschedulef to start on September, 2011. [3] However, there is no clear sign that this competition will be held.

The initial cup competition started by local amateur football organiser in Java, 1985.

PSSI started the professional cup competition in 2005. The competition has been named Copa Dji Sam Soe Indonesia in 2005–2009 due to sponsorship reason.
