"Voices in the Wind" is the follow-up to Bogguss's platinum-selling "Aces". While it earned her a second straight gold record and her highest-charting single ever, the #2 cover of John Hiatt's "Drive South," it did not reach the same level of success as its predecessor. As before, Bogguss benefits here from the support of a strong cast of songwriters. In addition to his "Drive South," Hiatt's "Lovin' a Hurricane" also appears on the LP. "Heartache," the album's second single, is a throwback to classic Country & Western co-written by Lowell George of Little Feat. Grammy winning songwriter Richard Leigh penned "Cold Day in July," which was recently recorded again by the Dixie Chicks. Cheryl Wheeler and Grammy-nominated songwriter Matraca Berg also contribute strong tracks.

"Letting Go," a single from "Aces" which was co-written by Bogguss's husband Doug Crider, peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart not long before the release of "Voices in the Wind". In an effort to capitalize on the single's success, it was included on the later album as well.
