thioredoxin (Trx). [cite journal |author=Mustacich D, Powis G |title=Thioredoxin reductase |url=http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?tool=pubmed&pubmedid=10657232 |journal=Biochem J |volume=346 Pt 1 |issue= |pages=1–8 |year= |pmid=10657232]Diversity
All known kingdom of organisms contain thioredoxin reductase. Two types of thioredoxin reductase evolved independently:
*prokaryotes ,archaea and mostplants have one type.
* highereukaryotes and some plants contain a different one that containsselenocysteine .Three TRs exist in animals: TR1, TR3, and TGR. Both TR1 [cite journal |author=Jakupoglu C, Przemeck G, Schneider M et al. |title=Cytoplasmic thioredoxin reductase is essential for embryogenesis but dispensable for cardiac development |journal=Mol. embryogenesis .Clinical significance
Since the activity of this enzyme is essential for cell growth and survival, it is a good target for anti-tumor therapy.
For example,
motexafin gadolinium (MGd) is a new chemotherapeutic agent that selectively targets tumor cells, leading to cell death and apoptosis via inhibition of thioredoxin reductase andribonucleotide reductase .
