Newton Township is a defunct township that existed within Sussex County, New Jersey, United States, from 1751 through 1864.

Newton Township was created on March 27, 1751, while the area was still part of Morris County and became part of the newly-created Sussex County upon its creation June 8, 1753. It was incorporated as one of New Jersey's initial 104 townships by an act by the New Jersey General Assembly on February 21, 1798.[1]

Portions of the township were taken to form Wantage Township (May 30, 1754), Hardyston Township (February 25, 1762), Frankford Township (April 10, 1797), Byram Township (April 9, 1798), Sparta Township (April 14, 1845) and Lafayette Township (April 14, 1845).[1]

On April 11, 1864, the remaining portions of Newton Township were split up to create Andover Township, Hampton Township and Newton Town, at which point Newton Township was dissolved.[1]
