Rosemarket

Rosemarket

Rosemarket is a village and community in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

The name means "market in the hundred of Roose (Welsh: Rhôs)" [Charles, B. G., "The Placenames of Pembrokeshire", National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1992, ISBN 0-907158-58-7, p 628] . It was a marcher borough founded by the Knights Hospitaller in the 12th century. Owen, in 1603, described it as one of nine Pembrokeshire "boroughs in decay" [Owen, George, "The Description of Penbrokshire by George Owen of Henllys Lord of Kemes", Henry Owen (Ed), London, 1892] . The church, like many in Roose, is dedicated to the local St Ismael. The village has a medieval dovecote [ [http://www.mypembrokeshire.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2005/05/08/427e91a08fbf5 Dovecote in MyPembrokeshire] ] , and a large hillfort.
