2003 United States Figure Skating Championships

2003 United States Figure Skating Championships

The U.S. Figure Skating Championships is an annual figure skating competition organzied by the United States Figure Skating Association. In addition to determining the national champions, the event was used to determine the U.S. teams for the World Figure Skating Championships, World Junior Figure Skating Championships, and the Four Continents Championships. Skaters competed in three levels: Senior, Junior, and Novice. Medals were awarded in four disciplines: Ladies singles, Men's singles, Pairs, and Ice dance. Medals were given out in four colors: gold (first), silver (second), bronze (third), and pewter (fourth). The 2003 Championships took place between January 12–19, 2003 in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Center.

"Disaster in Dallas"

The 2003 Nationals are generally considered to be one of the worst-skated championships in U.S. championships history with the name "Disaster in Dallas" being given to the event.

The senior men's and pairs competitions were the most notable "disaster" of the night. Johnny Weir, who had been in medal contention after the short program, hit the barrier during his long program, got up and restarted his program, then had to withdraw, starting a long chain of bad skating in the men's free. Also, few pair teams were able to skate cleanly that night.[1][2][3]
