Barbara Marshall (born
March 5 ,1944 ) is an Americantelevision broadcast journalist andelected official , currently serving asChairman of theHonolulu City Council in Honolulu,Hawaii . She is one of the first women to hold the office.Marshall is known throughout Hawaii for a decades-long career as an investigative journalist, consumer advocate, documentary filmmaker, news anchor and reporter for
KHON television station, which serves a broadcast area that covers the entire state.Born in
Berwyn, Illinois and graduate of the University of Illinois, Marshall became noteworthy as the first woman to anchor a television newscast in Illinois shortly after finishing journalism school. She rose to further prominence in Boston,Massachusetts in a decade of award-winning reporting forWBZ-TV . A number of her interviews and stories reachedNBC national newscasts. Marshall transported her career to Honolulu in 1979.Over a span of more than 20 years, Marshall earned reporting awards, created documentaries,initiated Action Line (a tv-consumer complaint line) and live election coverage in Hawaii. In 2002, she won a seat on the
Honolulu City Council in her first attempt at elective office. She was reelected to the council seat onSeptember 18 ,2004 and was elected chairman by her peers onJanuary 2 ,2007 .References
