Biography

Maya was born in La Paz, Mexico. She is of mixed Mexican and Turkish origin.[1][2][3] Her family moved to Melbourne, Victoria when she was one years old, they then relocated to Sydney, New South Wales when she was four. She grew up in Busby, a suburb in South-Western Sydney.

In 2003 she released her first album entitled Today, on Mother Tongues, the first label in the world dedicated to developing women in Hip-Hop music.[4]

Also In 2003, Eleven-piece Latin, Jazz, Hip-Hop band, Son Veneno, asked Maya to accompany them at The Belligen Global Music Festival. The combination have since performed at numerous festivals including Homebake, Bacardi Festival & supported American Singer Kelis.

She took over as host of Triple J's hip-hop show in 2004. She is also a regular host on Channel V,[5] she also holds hip-hop workshops in community centers. In 2006, Jupiter joined forces with fellow Rap artist MC Trey and DJ Nick Toth to form the group Foreign Heights. The group released their first single, It Goes On featuring Mr Zux in November of that year. The group's self-titled album was released in Australia in January 2007 and performed at the Big Day Out that same month.

On 14 April 2008 Hau from Koolism took over Maya's spot as the host of Triple J's weekly Hip-Hop Show, with Maya leaving to further her solo career in the US.[6][7]
