Chippewa Park Type Protected Area and Public Park Location Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada Coordinates 48°20′00″N 89°12′40″W / 48.3333333°N 89.21111°WCoordinates: 48°20′00″N 89°12′40″W / 48.3333333°N 89.21111°W Area 1.09 km² (270 acres)[1] Created 1921[2] Operated by City of Thunder Bay - Parks and Recreation Chippewa Park is located on the shore of Lake Superior, south of Thunder Bay, Ontario. From May Long Weekend to Labour Day Weekend (Canadian dates) the park operates a children's amusement park which features a C.W. Parker Carousel that was built between 1918 and 1920. There is also a Wildlife Park which is home to a variety of animals all native to North Western Ontario. There is a public beach, with sandy shores and shallow waters ideal for young children. Chippewa Park also boasts the best view of the Sleeping Giant in Thunder Bay! Chippewa Park also offers accommodations with new and historic cabins, RV sites and tenting sites to rent. [3] The park also features sandy beaches, panoramic views, and a public zoo which features birds and animals native to the area.
The Friends of Chippewa Park
The Friends of Chippewa Park is a Not-For-Profit organization, founded in 2002, whose aim is to restore Chippewa Park to its full potential. TFOCP have raised and invested over $6 million to preserve the Park's rich history, renovate & improve the physical grounds & structures, and enhance its natural beauty for all to enjoy. With a dedicated membership of neighbours, friends, and caring citizens TFOCP work to re-establish Chippewa Park as a destination of choice and a recreational haven. TFOCP is a very active organization that has made great strides in Chippewa’s restoration and continues to work hard planning for Chippewa’s future. Their mission statement is " To provide public amenities and to preserve, protect and promote the public park known as Chippewa Park located in and owned by the City of Thunder Bay with the intention that the park reaches its full potential as a public recreation area to the full benefit of the community."
