List of English words of Finnish origin

Few words of Finnish origin have entered other languages. On the contrary, the language is a rather a "net importer" of words. __NOTOC__

Words lent to the English language

Finnish has lent few words to the English language. The most commonly used Finnish word is "sauna", and has been lent to many other languages including Russian (сауна), Spanish (la sauna), Portuguese (a sauna), Latin (saun|a -"ae", "f".), German (die Sauna) etc. There are also words derived from Finnish in more specialized fields: rapakivi granite in geology, aapa mire (a marsh type) in biology, and the eläytyjist role-playing style.

In English, Finnish words such as kantele (a Finnish zither), motti (a Finnish military tactic) and puukko (a Finnish knife) are used with reference to the Finnish culture, but these words are not nativized in English and they are not used in other contexts.

English words coined by Finns

The expression "Molotov cocktail" ('Molotovin koktaili' in Finnish), a type of easy to make incendiary bomb, was coined by Finns in the Winter War.
