Florida State Road 656

Florida State Road 656

State Road 656 (also known as 17th Street Causeway) is a short Florida State Road in Indian River County. It is formerly part of State Road 60. Until the completion of the New Merrill Barber Bridge, State Road 60 rerouted to that new bridge. The old bridge was signed as SR 656. It is only 2 miles long, from U.S. Route 1 to State Road A1A inside the city limits of Vero Beach. Before the road crosses to the barrier island, it intersects with Indian River County Road 603. The road crosses the Intercoastal Waterway to Dark Point of the barrier island. State Road 60 is 1.4 miles north of the bridge. Finally, it ends its 2 mile journey at State Road A1A.

West of U.S. Route 1

The road becomes an unsigned road west of US 1. It is longer than SR 656 and is called 16th Street. Immediately west of the Florida East Coast Railroad is Indian River County Road 605. The road is now only 2 lanes wide like SR 510. It becomes a residential street beyond this point. Next, it passes another intersection of Indian River County Road 607. This road provides access to Vero Beach Municipal Airport. Then, it intersects with Indian River County Road 611, this road provides access to the farmlands of southern Indian River County and northern St. Lucie County. 1 block west of 56th Court is Kings Highway, the western terminus of 16th Street.
