Greene County is a county in central Virginia in the eastern United States. As of 2000, the population was 15,244. Its county seat is StanardsvilleGR|6.

Greene County is part of the Charlottesville Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Greene County was established in 1838 from Orange County. The county is named for American Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene.

A major incident occurred on October 24, 1979, when a natural gas main ruptured, causing an explosion. The resulting fire destroyed the bell tower of the county courthouse and county office building. However, quick action by the firemen on the scene saved the county records which were secured in the vault.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 157 square miles (407 km²), of which, 157 square miles (406 km²) of it is land and 0 square miles (1 km²) of it (0.25%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there are 15,244 people, 5,574 households, and 4,291 families residing in the county. The population density is 97 people per square mile (38/km²). There are 5,986 housing units at an average density of 38 per square mile (15/km²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.99% White, 6.45% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,574 households out of which 38.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.90% are married couples living together, 10.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.00% are non-families. 18.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 33.20% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 9.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $45,931, and the median income for a family is $48,548. Males have a median income of $32,020 versus $26,864 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,478. 6.60% of the population and 4.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.70% of those under the age of 18 and 7.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
