West Mambalam

West Mambalam (பைழய மாம்பலம் or ேமலமாம்பலம் in Tamil) is a prime residential location in Chennai city next to commercial shopping area, T.Nagar-located west of Anna Salai/Mount Road. Several years ago, it was called Maha Bilwa Puram, since there were lots of Vilwa trees here. It has down the line taken the name, West Mambalam. This is a nice,secured and best residential area to live in chennai.

History:Mambalam is divided into the East and the West by the railway line passing through. East Mambalam, is better known as Thyagaraya Nagar, most frequently referred to as T. Nagar.The western side of the railway line is the Old Mambalam or simply West Mambalam. Noted for the Sankara Mutt, Shiva Temple and the Kodhanda Ramaswamy Temple. This was the hub of West Mambalam, until in the past 10-15 years with the development of Aryagowder Road as the business center.

Past:In the past, West Mambalam was occupied mostly by Brahmin's and considered once to be the area of forward caste, now people of all caste come and settle here.

It has wide range of eateries where people storm up to have their piece of share .The most popular one's are 1) Venkaramana Poli stall ( one of the oldest ) 2) Venkateshwara Poli Stall. They have to goto tnagar for bus terminus ( one can go by 11g 11h and get down at panagal park and walk to bus terminus in 15 minutes ) Arya Gowda Road and Thambiah Reddy Road both host many shops.

Groceries:This area contains a large vegetable market.

There are many historical temples which are more than 100 years old and ayodhya mandapam which is said to be the place of vocalist offers place for many cultural events and many more for those who find to be religious. Temples 1.kasi viswanathar koil is a famous and oldest temple in mambalam which was dated back more than 500 years ago.According to history this temple was built by KING MAHABILESWAR now the temple was renovated and kumbabishekam was done in the month of july. 2.Sathya Narayana Kovil,3.Muragashramam 4.Kali bari temple, 5. Sri Sringeri Jagadguru Sankara Math (Krupa Sankari Street)6.Shridi Sai Baba temple at Jai sankar street,7.saneeshwaran temple is also called as tirunallar - south tirunallar)this temple includes PANCHAMUKHA ANJANEYAR and VINAYAKAR.8.ANJANEYAR TEMPLE near station road are few remarkable landmarks in West Mambalam.

The only disadvantage of this area is the frequent traffic jams at duraiswamy subway.It takes average of 10 - 20 mins to cross the subway which will be only 200 - 300 m
