Mozhga (Russian: Можга; Udmurt: Можга) is a town in the Udmurt Republic, Russia, located on the Syuginka River, 97 kilometers (60 mi) southwest of Izhevsk. It was founded in 1835 as a settlement around Syuginsky glass works. After the October Revolution, it was renamed Sovetsky (Сове́тский), and later Krasny (Кра́сный). It was granted town status and given its present name in 1926.

Mozhga is an important industrial center of southwestern Udmurtia.

History

The base of the settlement related to the construction of a Syuginsky glass factory on the Syuga river in 1835. The plant was built by the merchant Theodore Chernov from Yelabuga and was known for the production of technical glass, jugs, figurines of animals. In 1859, 34 yards of the village population of 290 inhabitants on the Syugailka river working water mill. In 1916, around the factory settlement was built railway station Syuginskaya. After the October Revolution, it was renamed Sovetsky (Сове́тский), and later Krasny (Кра́сный). It was granted town status and given its present name in 1926.

The city is located in the southwest of the Udmurt Republic, at the confluence of the rivers and Syuga Syugailka, 81 km from the capital of Udmurtia, Izhevsk. Around Mozhga vast forests and deposits of quartz sand, which determined the choice of location at the base of the future city

Mozhga and Udmurt Republic serves as the reference point for the timezone used in most of Central Russia, including Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The areas operate in what is referred to as Moscow Standard Time (MSK, МСК), which is 4 hours ahead of UTC, or UTC+4. Daylight saving time is no longer observed.

Udmurtia and Mozhga is within temperate continental climate, characterized by large annual range of temperature (hot summers and cold winters), and significant changes in temperature during the day.

Population: 47,959 (2010 Census preliminary results);[1] 47,119 (2002 Census);[2] 46,049 (1989 Census).[3]
