The species in this genus mostly have large, solid, fusiform shells, characterized, with a few exceptions, by having 4 or 5 strong plaits on the columella.

"Alcithoe" species are found in most seas, from shallow water to considerable depths, and are active predators, feeding primarily on bivalves. Intertidal species are found burrowing or half buried in sand or mud.
