Jaffe Road

Jaffe Road (Chinese: 謝斐道) is a long street in Hong Kong that runs between and parallel to Gloucester Road and Lockhart Road. At both the Wanchai and Causeway Bay ends of the street there are many bars and restaurants.

Jaffe Road starts from Arsenal Street and ends at The Excelsior Hotel near World Trade Centre.

Daniel Joseph Jaffé

Jaffé road was named after Daniel Joseph Jaffé, He was born on 2 November 1876 in London and died 11 June 1921 in Croydon, England.

Education

Educated at City & Guilds Westminster - diploma of associate (A.C.G.I). In 1896 articled for 3 years as civil engineer to Sir James Mansergh F.R.S, who was famous as a waterworks consulting engineer.

Career

Part of time spent on Elan Valley Aqueduct, later assistant to one of the resident engineers up to December 1901. On 14 Jan 1902 became associate member of the Institute of Civil Engineers (A.M.I.C.E.). Late that year went to Hongkong as Assistant Engineer in Public Works Department. In 1904 hebecame Acting Executive Engineer and from January 1906 was Executive Engineer.

He was responsible for Tytam (also spelled Tai Tam) waterworks with intermediate dam, later the 2nd section of the Tytam Tuk with the construction of the then largest dam in the Far East, which was officially opened by Sir Henry May in Feb 1918. Also responsible for Typhoon refuge at Mongkoktsui.

Went home on leave in 1918 suffering from sprue and inflammation of the liver. Invalided out of the Colonial Service in autumn 1919 and spent considerable time in Eversleigh Hospital for Tropical Diseases suffering from pernicious anaemia.
