Mueller's finish of ninth in his heat is somewhat rare, as sprint races typically have eight starters, but he still drew a positive by setting a new personal best.

Tonga, and Oceania as a whole (outside Australia and New Zealand) had only ever won one Olympic medal, and it came in Boxing in the Los Angeles Olympics.Paea Wolfgramme surprised everyone when he beat one of the tournament favourites, the Cuban Super heavyweight Champion. In Athens, Tonga sent one boxer to try to duplicate this performance, but he lost his first match.
