Tromsø University Museum is the oldest scientific institution in North-Norway. It was established in 1872 and incorporated in the University of Tromsø in 1976. The museum has 80,000-90,000 visitors annually.

The museum consists of six departments
* Geology
* Botany [http://uit.no/tmu/149/60 research projects]
* Zoology
* Archaeology [http://uit.no/tmu/138/2 Excavations/Research projects]
* Cultural History maintains a photo collection of more than 100,000 (historic) pictures
* Sámi Ethnography

The museum publish the popular science magazine "Ottar" (Norwegian only) and an English language publication called "Way North".
