"Over It" is the first single released from the eponymous album by Katharine McPhee, the American Idol season five (2006) finalist.[1] The song was reportedly described by McPhee as "the only real pop song on the record" and as being "a very sultry song about young love".[1] The song was produced by Billy Steinberg and Josh Alexander, and written by Alexander, Steinberg and Ruth-Anne Cunningham, the writers of JoJo's "Too Little Too Late". The song is available for listening via online music services such as AOL and MySpace, courtesy of RCA Records. McPhee has since stated that this was not "[her] favorite song" and she did not want her "song to be something that [she] was a part of."[2]

In the song, McPhee sings over a sultry beat driven by acoustic guitars about letting go of the person one loves because one does not share the same feeling. The narrator complains about how their lover cheats on them, and is betraying their trust.

The song is somewhat tongue-in-cheek in that McPhee describes several qualities about her ex-boyfriend, while at the same time she seems to fixate on them, showing she is not fully over him.

Music video

The video premiered on TRL on February 23, 2007. The video starts with McPhee in front of a camera singing to her ex-boyfriend. Then McPhee is shown getting ready to go out with her friends to a house party. The video then shows scenes of Katharine singing in a car with her friends. When she gets into the house party, she finds her ex-boyfriend in the middle of the dancefloor. She tries to reach him to give him the DVD that she recorded in front of the camera but he walks away without noticing her. This is followed by several scenes of Katharine singing in front of the camera. Finally she reaches her ex-boyfriend in a very romantic way while feigning to want to kiss him, but she only gives him the DVD that she recorded and walks away. On March 23, 2007 the music video was released on 5,000 movie screens.

Alternate ending

The video is the same in the beginning, but has an alternate ending. In this version, when she reaches her ex-boyfriend she feigns to want to kiss him and removes the DVD from her pocket and makes to hand it to him, but at the last second she puts it back in her pocket, suggesting she isn't "over it", and they are seen walking away smiling and holding hands.

Chart performance

"Over It" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 48 on the chart for the week ending February 17, 2007.[3] It peaked at number 29 on the Hot 100. The song also peaked at #21 on Pop Radio. The song has sold over 645,000 downloads to date[4] and was certified Gold in 2008.[5]
