While Waterloo is just a threat, Brussels is the most exciting city in Europe. Amongst the fashionable ton partying in the metropolis Lady Barbara Childe (the Granddaughter of Dominic the Duke of Avon) is making her mark. And the most lovesick of her admirers is no other than Colonel the Hon. Charles Audley (the brother of Julian the Earl of Worth). However Lady Barbara is determined to make sure that Charles is aware of how awful a person she is. Charles endures much at her hands, but eventually, after he takes action to avoid a public scandal, they have a violent quarrel and their engagement is terminated. Barbara plays the flirt and Charles becomes close to another young lady. However when the fateful Battle of Waterloo arrives, Barbara goes in search of Charles only to learn from Judith Worth, Charles' sister-in-law, that he has gone. When Worth discovers that Barbara's brother the Marquis of Vidal has gone back to England, Worth takes Barbara in. Judith and Barbara help to nurse the wounded in the street. When Charles comes back, he is in danger of his life and has to have his arm amputated. The surgeons also say that they might have to cut off his leg, but Worth steps in and stops them from doing it. When Charles regains lucidity, he reproposes to Barbara, and she accepts.
