Type 062 class gunboat is the successor of
Shantou class gunboat , and it is also known as Shanghai-I/II classes. The class is larger than its predecessor and is the most widely built and exported Chinese military boat in terms of numbers. This unsophisticated class is relatively well armed for its size, and with patrol mission as main duty, supplemented by ASW missions.hanghai-I class gunboat
The first of the Type 062 class gunboat family was Shanghai-I class, with a total of 12 built, and some of which remained in active service well into the early 1990’s. The Shanghai-I class is slightly smaller than its successor Shanghai-II, displacing 125 tons instead of 135 tons, and it has a Chinese Type 66 57 mm twin gun mount forward. The dimensions for Shanghai-I class is 36 m x 5.5 m x 1.6 m, and all other specification are identical to Shanghai-II class, which replaced the 57 mm with the 37 mm twin gun mounts.

Another derivative of the Type 062 family is the Fushun class minesweeper developed from Shanghai-II class gunboat. This minesweeper version had reduced armament, with minesweeping gear replacing some of weapons. All other characteristic of this class is identical to that of Shanghai-II class, and all of the 20 units were transferred to reserves subordinated to the naval militia for training purposes, and they are being mothballed.
