Medieval history refers to the period of Western European history known as the
Middle Ages , which lasted from the5th century (when the Roman Empire was divided into theWestern Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire) until the16th century (during theProtestant Reformation and during the early stage of the dispersal of Europeans worldwide via overseas exploration).Periods in the history of non-European areas, particularly China and Japan, are also colloquially referred to as 'medieval'.
