As of 2003, the town has an estimated population of 12,190 and a density of 97.43 persons per km². The total area is 125.11 km².
The town is known locally for the "thousand cherry trees" which line the banks of the Natsui River. It is also one of the purported birthplaces of Heian period poet Ono no Komachi.
