School Symbol

The leafed tree symbolizes the founding spirit of the Myong Ji Educational Foundation to imbue the students with the Christian faith, so that they may become devoted and capable leaders who can contribute to the advancement of our culture and national prosperity and ultimately to the realization of world peace.

School Mascot

The white stallion is a symbol of loyalty, courage, obedience, and purity. It is also a reference to the equestrian origins of the Korean people. The School Mascot is, therefore, a representation of the profound hope that Myongjians, like the White Stallion, will also be steeped in such virtues as loyalty, courage, obedience, and purity, as they gallop into the world for the realization of God's kingdom here on earth.

Myongji University and Pakistan

Myongji University is working with the Government of Korea to establish a University (Pakistan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, PAIST) in Peshawar, Pakistan.

The Pakistan government's project for PAIST which will be set up by the Korean university is believed to result from their experience with Chung Kun-mo, president of the university, who was the former vice-president of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, the predecessor of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). Six universities including Myongji are expected to operate PAIST over the next 10 years following its establishment. The partnership universities will be involved in such projects as selecting likely curricula, designing school buildings and dispatching faculty members from their own countries. The school said that about 500 students would be recruited by every institute in the six cities. The school is considering forming a consortium with other universities in Korea to conduct the project. The project will be a large-scale project as a Korean university operating in Pakistan.

Under the MOU signed between the Myongji University and Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan, University has given admission to Pakistani student in MS (Master of Science) Engineering Course. Korean language and Korean Economics courses and many culture exchange programmes are also being introduced for Pakistani students. Students will be offered internship in Korean Companies after completion of the MS degree. Courses are taught in English.

Korea-Pakistan Friendship Association

Korea and Pakistan on 2007-April-12 inaugurated a new friendship association in Seoul to promote closer economic, cultural and academic ties between the two countries.

The association will be based in Myongji University, and will be run and administered by Koreans. Oh Jae-hi, the first Korean ambassador to Pakistan (1983 to 1984), was named chairman.

The association plans to hold exhibitions and seminars, as well as conferences and seminars. It will also publish newsletters so that members can learn more about Pakistan and businesses will be better informed about opportunities there.

Members of the association include former Korean diplomats, Korean and Pakistani businessmen and professors.

Members of the Korea Mountaineer Association will also be part of the organization, as Pakistan boasts K-2, the second highest mountain in the world.

Pakistan provided generous financial aid during the 1950-53 Korean War, and Mahbub ul Haq, a Pakistani economist working at the World Bank, guided Korea’s five-year economic plan at the time.

Due to the international political climate, official diplomatic relations were not normalized until 1983. Since then, however, the two countries have enjoyed rapid progress in cultural, economic and political exchanges.

Today, Korea and Pakistan have about 26 bilateral agreements in science and technology, commercial investment and culture. There are currently about 200 Pakistani students studying at Korea’s top universities.

Baduk studies

"Korea's baduk education may even continue at the university level. Myongji University in Seoul is currently the only academic institution in the world with a baduk department."

The Department of Baduk Studies was established in 1997, for the first time in world history, to pursue an academic study of baduk. The Department of Baduk Studies has been set up with the following aims:

1) To promote students Baduk strength above the 5 dan level

2) To acquire a deeper knowledge of life from Baduk culture

3) To develop and educate the leaders in the field of Baduk

4) To teach necessary foreign languages to those who can introduce Baduk culture to the world

The Department teaches Baduk theory and technique systematically, researches Baduk culture in depth, and acquires wide and various knowledge related to Baduk. The graduates will make proper Baduk leaders in Korea and also in foreign countries.

The area of the Baduk Studies is divided into the nature of Baduk, technical theory, practical matches, related fields, Baduk education, and professional administration, to name a few.

History of the Department, 1997: Baduk Instruction Studies was established in the College of Arts and Physical Education as a course, 1998: Promoted as an independent Department in the College of Arts and Physical Science, 1999: Enrollment quota was increased to 30, 2000: The first Bachelor of Art in Baduk Studies appeared, 2001: Graduate School of Baduk Studies was opened, 2003: The first Master of Art in Baduk Studies appeared
