The following is a list of the Governors of the State of California. The governor is the head of the
executive branch ofCalifornia 's government and thecommander-in-chief of the state's military forces. The governor has a duty to enforce state laws, and the power to either approve orveto bills pass by theCalifornia Legislature , to convene the legislature, and to grantpardon s, except in cases ofimpeachment . California Constitution of 1849 provided for the office of governor to be elected every two years, with no set start date for the term.
