Commercial Advertising
Compared to other Australian
television stations, including channel Nine, Seven, Ten and TVS, the ABC is a station watched by a minority group. The ABC channel provides entertainment without commercial advertising (Excluding the advertisement of other ABC programs in between programs). This lack of commercial advertising is the main reason why the majority of ABC viewers tune in to the ABC channel. The reason why ABC is able to have minimal advertising is that it is funded by the AustralianFederal Government , and therefore does not require additional funds from advertising companies. [ [http://abc.com.au/ ABC.net.au ] ]Children's Programs
Another reason why the ABC channel is popular is that, during the afternoon hours, after school has been completed for the day, ABC provides several children's programs, both educational and entertaining. This is not done by the other television stations in Australia, and therefore the ABC attracts the majority of the population aged 0-14. Admittedly, the ABC does purchase the majority of its children's programs from overseas, but a large amount of the children's shows broadcasted are in fact made in Australia, by Australia, for the children in Australia.
Other Programs
The majority of programs broadcasted by the ABC have been bought from the
BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). These programs are generally well liked by most viewers of ABC, due to the similar sense of humor shared by both countries. The ABC station is renown for it's frequent use of documentaries, and, as such, is viewed as the educational channel in Australia. One show that is currently broadcasted on the ABC and is known world wide is "the Chasers War on Everything".News and Current Affairs
The ABC is funded almost entirely by the Australian
Federal Government and is therefore commonly viewed as being bias or a source ofpropaganda . This is not the case. The ABC provides a fair view on all current events and issues, and does not dramatise its news stories. [ [http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/HOMEPAGE/PC=HOME ACMA - Home page ] ]References
