From its southern terminus in Gray, where State Route 22 departs
U.S. Route 129 , State Route 44 travels northeast, cosigned with U.S. Route 129, to just south of Eatonton. There, U.S. Route 129 departs, and continues north cosigned withU.S. Route 441 /State Route 24, while State Route 44 continues north into downtown Eatonton cosigned withU.S. Route 441 Business /State Route 24 Business. State Route 44 departs downtown to the east, cosigned with State Route 16 for a few miles, before departing S.R. 16 and continuing to the northeast. The route crosses overLake Oconee , then has an interchange atInterstate 20 before arriving in Greensboro. In Greensboro, State Route 44 becomes cosigned withU.S. Route 278 /State Route 12, and the three routes travel to the east to Union Point. In Union Point, State Route 44 departs U.S. Route 278 and, after being briefly cosigned with State Route 77, continues to the east-northeast to Washington. After a brief cosignage in Washington withU.S. Route 78 /State Route 10, State Route 44 continues to the northeast, meeting its northern terminus at State Route 79 northwest of Lincolnton.ignificance
