- Thessaloniki Urban Area
The Thessaloniki Urban Area consists of fourteen municipalities and two communities. It is the urban core of the
Thessaloniki Metropolitan Area . The urban area is sometimes referred to as the city of Thessaloniki, as there is no clear visual distinction or geographic barrier between the municipality of Thessaloniki and the other municipalities of the area. The largest of the municipalities, in terms of population is the municipality ofThessaloniki .The remaining municipalities, in descending order of population, are:
Kalamaria ,Evosmos ,Sykies ,Stavroupoli , Ampelokipoi,Polichni , Neapoli,Pylaia ,Eleftherio-Kordelio ,Menemeni , Panorama,Triandria ,Agios Pavlos , and the communities ofEfkarpia andPefka .When Thessalonians refer to the city of Thessaloniki, they refer to this urban area. The municipality of Thessaloniki is commonly called "Kentro" or "Center." The municipalities in the urban area had a combined population of 800,764 inhabitants in the 2001 Greek census. Their combined land area is 131.209 km² (50.660 sq mi). The average
population density in the area is 6,102.97 inhabitants/km² (15,806.61/sq mi).
