Llanrumney (Welsh "Llanrhymni": "llan" parish + Rhymney River) is a district of the city of Cardiff, Wales.

The Llanrumney district is largely a council estate, surrounded by the areas of St Mellons, Pentwyn and Rumney. It has three small shopping areas, a large leisure centre, a secondary school (Llanrumney High School) and a number of primary schools, including:
* Bryn Hafod Primary School
* Pen-y-Bryn School
* Glan-yr-Afon Primary School
* St Cadoc's Primary School
* St Mellons Church in Wales School.

History

The land where modern Llanrumney stands was left to Keynsham Abbey by the Lord of Glamorgan after the Norman Conquest.cite news | first = Katie | last = Bodinger | title = A journey through city's suburban past | work = South Wales Echo | date = 15 September 2006] According to legend, Llywelyn the Last, the final prince of an independent Wales, was interred in a stone coffin by the monks in 1282, on land where Llanrumney Hall would be built centuries later. After Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries in the sixteenth century, the land passed to the Kemeys family. It remained in their possession until 1951, when it and its grounds were compulsorily purchased by the local authority in order to build the large estates that can be seen there today. Llanrumney Hall

The area hosts Llanrumney Hall, nowadays a reputedly haunted pub. It is believed to have been the home of the pirate Captain Henry Morgan, born there in 1635.

Henry Morgan then went to Jamaica, and named a place in St Mary, Llanrumney. Its still called exactly that today, Llanrumney in Jamaica!

Transport

Cardiff Bus routes 49/50 from Central Station via Newport Road serves the heart of Llanrumney, terminating at Countisbury Avenues Shopping Parade. Route 101 travels between Llanrumney and Heath Hospital. Newport Road is the main road running beside Llanrumney, connecting it to the city centre to the south and St Mellons, the A48(M) and Newport to the north.

Future Developments

In February 2008, Cardiff County Council approved plans for a new Park and Ride facility to be created on the Rhymney River flood plain adjacent to the nearby Pentwyn Interchange of the A48. Politics

The electoral ward of Llanrumney falls within the parliamentary constituency of Cardiff South and Penarth. It is bounded by the wards of Pontprennau & Old St. Mellons to the north, Rumney to the south, Penylan to the southwest, and Pentwyn to the west.
