North of Scotland Electricity plc (UK company number SC117119) was formed on 1 April 1989 to acquire the assets of North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board ahead of electricity privatisation in the United Kingdom.
The name was changed to Scottish Hydro-Electric plc on 1 August 1989 and the company was floated on the London Stock Exchange in June 1991.
A further name change to Scottish and Southern Energy plc was made on 14 December 1998 after the merger with Southern Electric plc.
