Zavolzhye, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast

Zavolzhye, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast

Zavolzhye ( _ru. Заволжье) is a town in Gorodetsky District of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia. It is located on the right bank of the Volga, opposite Gorodets. Population: 42,900 (2005 estimate), 43,971 (2002 Census).

Zavolzhye was built in the 1950s along with the construction of the Gorky Hydroelectric Station(now Nizhny Novgorod Hydroelectric Station), and was granted the town status in 1964. It is theterminus of the electric railroad line from Nizhny Novgorod.

Note on the name

The word "Zavolzhye" literally means " [the lands] beyond the Volga", i.e. on the river's left side, since "beyond" is taken relative to the historically more populated right bank of the river. Thus, "Zavolzhye" the region normally refers in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast to its forested and sparsely populated north-eastern half. This makes the name of Zavolzhye the city somewhat confusing for some people in the region, since the city is located on the "right" side of the river -- still, "beyond the river" with respect to the old Gorodets.
