(paternal first cousin, once removed)Oscar Marone (also known as "Oz" or "Ozzy") is a fictional character in the CBS soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful, portrayed by actor Brian Gaskill from 2003 to 2004.
Character
Oscar was born and primarily raised in Atlantic City by his mother and his father, a small-timer. After Oscar's mother died when he was 15, his father moved the family to Las Vegas so he could own a major casino. Initially Oscar learned the casino business from his father, but when his father died two years before Oz showed up in Los Angeles, Oscar took over the day to day operations. Unfortunately, the mob in Las Vegas wanted to control of Oscar's casino like they controlled every other casino. Oscar was first seen onscreen calling his uncle, Massimo Marone (Joseph Mascolo), from a payphone, asking if he could come over, because he needed help. Massimo hung up on Oscar after telling him that he was a legitimate businessman and wanted no part of Oscar's world. Oscar called back, begging him for help. Massimo still refused, and moments later, gunshots rang out. Oscar was taken into the emergency ward without identification, and only Massimo's number in his pocket. The first person he met in L.A. was med student Bridget Forrester (then played by Jennifer Finnigan, later Emily Harrison, now Ashley Jones). She was there when he woke, and he startled her by grabbing her to ask where Paolo was. Bridget took off, and Oscar tried to find Paolo on his own. Just then, Massimo came in to tell Oscar that Paolo was dead as a result of Oscar having followed in his father's crooked footsteps. Mass then left, just as a hitman came to finish Oscar off, and ended up taking Bridget hostage. Oscar was not strong enough to help, but luckily, Bridget was able to take care of herself. The two settled their earlier dispute and began a tentative friendship. Oscar was then moved to a new room due to a bed shortage, where he was placed with Amber Moore (Adrienne Frantz) (it was against hospital policy, but necessary due to lack of room). Neither of them were thrilled to be sharing a room. The curtain between the two was pulled, and Oz couldn't see what was going on with Amber, but when he heard her talking about her son with a voice he recognized, he started to pay attention, and announced himself to Deacon (Sean Kanan). Years earlier, Oscar and his father had kicked Deacon out of Vegas for cheating in the casinos and stealing chips. Deacon was far more crooked than Oscar could ever have been. Amber was overjoyed to hear this and wanted Oscar to help her get her son back, but Oscar said he wanted nothing to do with her scheming. Bridget saved him from Amber, but shocked him when she admitted she was once married to Deacon. Oscar admitted that at one time he and Deacon were good friends and Oscar even got him a job at his father's casino, until Deacon started embezzling funds from them. He shared with Bridget his dream of owning his own club. He couldn't stop thinking about it after talking to her, and decided to do it...he bought The Lair, and turned it into Ozzz.
Oscar made plans for the grand-opening of Ozzz, which included trying to get a major local talent to perform... Deacon's wife, Macy (Bobbie Eakes). After promising Deacon and Macy he would pay her upfront and let them know if there are any problems with his past, Oscar lined up Macy for opening night. As Oscar was getting ready for his big night, he was confronted with two men from his past: hired killer Scarface, who had tried to kill Oscar in the hospital, and his boss, Jimmy Walton. The two wanted a piece of the Ozzz action, but Oscar told them to get out of his club. They told him he'd regret it. Keeping his promise to Deacon, he called, letting him know he needed to talk to him before Macy went on-stage. When the club opened, with Macy singing, it was a huge success. The place was packed, and Macy gave an excellent performance. Oscar was enjoying everything when he happened to glance up at the chandelier...to see Scarface sabotaging it! Although Oscar tried to get to Macy he was unsuccessful, and the chandelier came crashing down on her. She was immediately rushed to the hospital, and Deacon blamed Oscar for his wife's death.
Deacon was not the only one who blamed Oscar - Oscar blamed himself as well. Bridget tried to comfort him at the club, but he was inconsolable. Even though he turned the men in, he felt responsible for what happened to Macy. With Bridget's help, he went to the hospital to offer his apologies to a comatose Macy, barely escaping before Deacon could see him. He returned to the club, determined to close it forever and shut it down, when Amber showed up. Initially she sang for him, but that didn't do any good. Then she put on a magic show. Her acts didn't convince Oscar to hire her, but they did remind him how much the club meant to him. Meanwhile, the friendship between Bridget and Oscar grew and Amber noticed how close they were. Amber never liked Bridget and decided to break their friendship. She showed up at Oscars place and thanks to some accidents, Ambers clothes got dirty. Oscar offered her to take a shower and while he was changing and Amber walked into the room with wearing nothing but a towel, Bridget showed up to. Confused that Amber and Oscar might have a relationship, she left, but Oscar followed her. He made her clear what happened that night and Bridget was relieved. Both then realized that their feelings for each other had grown a lot.
Oscar proposed to Bridget, and the two began planning a wedding. They left L.A. to head for Copenhagen, so that Bridget could finish her studies, but Bridget returned alone a few months later, announcing that she and Oscar had broken up. Oscar stayed in Copenhagen and presumably still resides there.
Notes
- Gaskill's abrupt departure from the show in 2004 was due to a negative fan reaction to the recast of his love interest, Bridget from Jennifer Finnigan to Emily Harrison.
