supertall skyscraper project aimed at helping put an end to majorcongestion and lack ofgreenspace in theTokyo ,Japan metropolitan area. The plan consists of a building convert|1000|m|ft|0 tall and convert|400|m|ft|0|abbr=on wide at the base, and a total floor area of convert|8|km2|sqmi|1|abbr=on. [http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=135989 Sky City 1000 - Emporis] ] The design, proposed in 1989 by
Takenaka Corporation , would house between 35,000 [ [http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/engineering/skycity/interactive/interactive.html Discovery Channel :: Extreme Engineering: Sky City ] ] and 36,000 [ [http://www.takenaka.co.jp/takenaka_e/techno/63_sky/63_sky.htm SKY CITY 1000 ] ] full-time residents, as well as 100,000 workers. It comprises 14 concave dish-shaped "Space Plateaus" stacked one upon the other. The interior of the plateaus would contain greenspace, and on the edges, on the sides of the building, would be the apartments. Also included in the building would beoffice s, commercial facilities, school s,theatre s, and other modern amenities.Since its announcement, it has garnered a lot of attention from the world's
architectural establishment, and was featured onCNN 's "This Week in Japan" in1989 , and onDiscovery Channel 's "Extreme Engineering " in2003 .Land prices in Japan are the highest in the world, and
Kisho Kurokawa , one of Japan's most famous architects, has said that even staggeringly ambitious buildings employing highly sophisticated engineering are still cheap, because companies pay 90 per cent of their money for the land and only 10 per cent for the building. Triple-decker high speedelevator s which would be used in the building are also being designed in labs outside Tokyo. Although this project has gained more serious attention than many of its alternatives, it can be considered similar to projects such asX-Seed 4000 and to ultra-high density, mixed use concepts such asPaolo Soleri 'sArcology andLe Corbusier 's Radiant City.ee also
