Edmund Capon

Dr Edmund Capon AM OBE (born 1940 in England) is an art scholar specialising in Chinese art. He has been director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales since 1978. He is Chairman of football (soccer) club, Sydney FC. He is also a member of the Committee for Sydney.

Dr Edmund Capon became the director of the Art Gallery of NSW in 1979 and with his ideas he has transformed the Art Gallery of NSW and made it a major cultural institution within Australia. Specialising in Chinese textiles and costume he has created a large and diverse collection of art works that capture the attention of most visitors.

Under his direction the Art Gallery of NSW has become a major cultural institution within Sydney. Remarkably the annual Archibald Prize exhibition is the best attended Art Exhibition in Australia most years.
