Central College is a private liberal arts college located in Pella, Iowa. It is a four-year school affiliated with the Reformed Church in America. Central has a student body of approximately 1,600 individuals and a 130 acre (526,000 m²) main campus. The college is noted for its study abroad program.

History

The college was founded in 1853 and officially opened on October 8, 1854. The first class was 37 people. Central was a Baptist institution until 1916, when it was transferred to the control of the Reformed Church in America.

Originally named Central University of Iowa (CUI), the college officially changed its name to "Central College" in the mid '90s.

It is home to local radio station 89.1 KCUI-FM.

Central has a pre-college summer program for local high school students called Upward Bound.

Famous graduates include reporter Harry Smith.

Central has also had a rich history of interesting architectural features. The first buildings of the new college in 1853 are Dutch Colonial and part of the present day fine dining Strawtown Inn. The first dormitory, Cotton Hall, was an architectural wonder with its ornate Victorian porch and splendid stained glass windows. The unique buildings continue today with the addition of "green" buildings. The main feature of the campus is a pond in the center of campus. Central is also one of few schools with a public history major, and part of this focuses on architecture history.

Greek life

Central is currently home to eight local fraternities and sororities. All of them participate in Central's "Greek Council" in which at least three representatives from each group meet to discuss issues pertaining to Greek life (such as pledging and housing), and plan campus-wide activities and service projects.

All of Central's Greek organizations are local and have no chapters at other colleges.

Central College has a policy of "deferred recruitment" regarding Greek organizations; first-year students must be enrolled for at least one semester before they are allowed to pledge.

;Beta Kappa Epsilon
Beta Kappa Epsilon (ΒΚΕ) is Central's oldest fraternity and was founded in 1947. Both the group and its members are usually referred to as "the Beakes".

BKE hosts a party each spring called the "Beake Bash".

;Phi Delta TauPhi Delta Tau (ΦΔΤ) became Central's second fraternity in 1961.

;Theta Kappa AlphaTheta Kappa Alpha (ΘΚA) was the third fraternity to be founded at Central in 1967. The members of Theta Kappa Alpha (the "Thetas") host Central's annual Lemming Race (see "Traditions".)

;Sigma Phi OmegaSigma Phi Omega (ΣΦΩ) became Central's first sorority in 1969. The Sigmas are best known for their work with the blood drives that are brought to campus each semester by the [http://www.bloodonor.org/ Blood Center of Iowa] . They help with advertising, recruiting donors, and assisting at the donation site.

;Alpha Delta EpsilonAlpha Delta Epsilon sorority (AΔЕ) was founded in 1971. The Alpha Delts' colors are maroon and gold.

;Alpha Zeta ChiAlpha Zeta Chi (AZX) was founded as an all-male fraternity in 1988, on the principles of looking beyond people's differences and respecting each individual's dignity, and with the goal of improving the social climate at Central College. In 1998, AZX began accepting female members, thus becoming Central's first co-ed fraternity.

In the past, AZX was known for its weekly movie nights, which were held every Thursday; this was discontinued due to copyright laws. AZX hosts a party called the "Virgin Mixer" in the fall, at which virgin drinks are served (thus the name.) It is open to all students.

AZX's pledge paddles are made from canoe paddles, which represent the "upstream battle" that its founders went through to have AZX officially recognized as a Greek organization.

Recording artist and stand-up comedian, Jeremy "Jer-Dog" Danley joined AZX in 1994. In 1996, he and his future wife consummated their relationship on a couch in the cold basement of the fraternity house.

AZX's motto is "Dignity through Diversity to Unity". Their mascot is the wild Celtic moose, and their colors are forest green and silver.

;Zeta UpsilonZeta Upsilon (ZY) is a sorority that was founded in 1995 and established in 1996. They are the second youngest sorority on campus. They have been known for having a fall dinner at their house, and a spring semester tug-o-war on study day.

ZY's motto is "Friendship through the acceptance of Individuality." Their mascot is the frog. Their colors are purple and green with an accent color of silver. Zeta Upsilon has pledging in the fall and also in the spring. Each Pledge receives a pledge mother who will assist them through their journey and perhaps become their best friend. The mother(s) make paddles for their daughter(s) and the daughter(s) make paddles for their mothers. Zeta Upsilon stands for Strong Uteri or Strong Woman.

;Psi Sigma TauPsi Sigma Tau (ΨΣΤ) is Central's newest group, having been tentatively approved by Greek Council in the spring of 2006. It is the first group to be founded as a co-ed fraternity.

Traditions

*Every year during homecoming Central has an annual tradition called the Lemming Race (hosted by Theta Kappa Alpha fraternity) in which students dress up in costumes and, led by the Grand Lemming, run from Geisler Library to the island in the pond.
*The Monday during finals week there is a breakfast meal served in the cafeteria at 10:00 PM called "The Breakfast of Champions".
*Christmas Candlelight Concert, a holiday music concert, has been a tradition for nearly 30 years.
*Central's central campus has a British-style phone booth.
*On a student's birthday they get thrown into the pond.
