The Bandarwela Madya Maha Vidyalaya ("Bandarawela Central College") is the best public school situated in Uva province, Sri Lanka. This is a National School which is controlled by the central government as opposed to the Provincial Council and provides both primary and secondary education. This is the main education institute which produce hundreds of university students for the local universities from the Uva province annually. This is also known as the golden flower of the Uva province.

History

The foundation for establishment of Bandarawela central college in this area was caused due to Japanese bomb attack to Colombo city during the period of second world war. In 1942, 1-3 forms of the Royal College, Colombo were shifted to Glendale bungalow in Bandarawela, where BCC stands today. In 1944 the Royal College Preparatory School also brought to the same place. This was in place until 1948 when they were moved back to Colombo.

After the departure of Royal College, the a new school was established in the former premises. Though with humble beings with just one or two building in its early days the school grew with Glendale bungalow begin granted to the school by Mr. Hoak along with its land of convert|26|acre|m2. In 1954 the Prime minister Sir John Kotelawala declared open the college main hall and two storied building, which caused to rapid development of the facilities in the college. In 1958 this was called as Bandarawela senior school and after 1972 Bandarawela Senior College became the Bandarwela Madya Maha Vidyalaya (Bandarawela Central College). In 1986 November BMMV became a National school and on that time this school was the one and only National school in Uva province. In 1974 BMMV ‘s primary section was separated and started as another school called Bandarawela Darmashoka vidyalaya. But in 1986 it was started again very close to the Bandarawela central college and it was called as Dr. E.W Adikaram Primary school, Bandarawela.

Present status of the school

Today the school educates close to 4000 primary and secondary students both in Sinhala and English mediums. The students can select the learning medium according to their preference. Today school is divided two main sections for administrative purposes. They are primary (grade 1-5) section and secondary (grade 6-13) education section. The school provide accommodation for both boys and girls to reach better success. For many years the school has maintained an excellent academic record both in ordinary and advance levels with its students archiving the highest grades in the province as well as island wide.

Today school provide different kinds of facilities to accomplish the tasks of the students. The school is fully equipped with large amount of facilities such as science laboratories, IT unit, large play ground, library, auditoriums, aesthetics sections, etc. It also provides good sport facilities to improve the students athletics and other sports skills.

Houses

The students of the BMMV are divided in to four houses to improve their skills and attitudes.

The names of the houses are derived from past great Kings who led our country to the great situation with Battles and politics. Annually the college organize inter houses athletic games to improve the athletics skills of the students as well as their team spirit. This provides great opportunity for the students to become a good athlete in their future.

Sports

Sectional head of the sports of Bandarawela Central College is Mrs Kalyani Widyarathne. Mr. Nishantha Bandara (Prefect of Games) and Mrs. Delsika Fernando act as Teachers in charge of sports. There is also trainers and coaches are available for the different games.

Golden Battle of Uva

Golden Battle of Uva is annual cricket match (Big match) plays against St. Joseph college Bandarawela. First match was played in 1996 at school play ground. But after that match it was played at Bandarawela Urban Council play ground up to year 2003. Unfortunately this has been stopped since 2003 due to some authorities problems.
