M. Shanmugavel, popularly known as MS, is a Tamil journalist and is the editor of Makkal Kural and Trinity Mirror.
Early life
He was born on
July 4 ,1927 to S. Muthu Kumar and Meenakshi Ammal and had early education inAruppukottai . He was forced to discontinue his education in FA, at Madura College due to financial distress.Fact|date=March 2007Journalist
He started his journalistic career in 1946 at the
Daily Thanthi inCoimbatore . Later, in the mid-fifties, he teamed up with a band of dedicated journalists and started the first ever cooperative venture,Navamani , a Tamileveninger which became very popular.Fact|date=March 2007 The paper also had the distinction of twice winning the Central government's best display award. In 1973, he started his own venture,
Makkal Kural as a limited company. He was invited by Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Narashima Rao to accompany them during their foreign tours on various occasions. He also had the privilege of attending the UN conference and the Davos economic summit.Publisher
In 1995 he started an English eveninger,
Trinity Mirror to cater to the needs of industrial circle. Makkal Kural was the first to install high speed web offset machine, later was the first ever in South India to go for computerised DTP in the late 80s. Fact|date=March 2007Awards
MS has won the Central governments Awards for the best layout and news presentations for 5 times, twice for Tamil and thrice for the English paper. He was a former member of Temples committee under HR and CE department headed by then Chief Minister of
Tamil Nadu Jayalalitha and was also a former member of the high level committee for prohibition enforcement constituted by Government of Tamil Nadu.External links
