Henry J. Kaiser High School is a WASC-accredited four-year public high school located in Honolulu, Hawaiokinai.

Basic Information

Named after American industrialist Henry J. Kaiser (who developed the Hawaiokinai Kai community), the school opened its doors in 1971, four years after Kaiser's death. Although enrollment has fluctuated throughout the years along with changing community demographics, the school currently serves approximately 1,100 students in grades 9–12. The school's mascot is the Cougar and the school colors are blue and gold.

Kaiser High School's mission statement, as laid out on their official website, is:"to ensure that all members have the opportunity to reach their maximum potential, to encourage students to be responsible learners, who are caring and contributing members of society, to provide a safe and supportive learning environment, to provide a balanced and varied curriculum that challenges students to strive for excellence."

The Kaiser complex, to which Kaiser High belongs, also includes okinaĀina Haina Elementary, Hahaokinaione Elementary, Kamiloiki Elementary, Koko Head Elementary, Niu Valley Middle, and Wailupe Valley Elementary Schools.

Campus

Kaiser is situated in Hawaiokinai Kai, a small upper-middle class suburban community in East Honolulu on the island of Ookinaahu. The campus boasts six classroom buildings as well as a number of trailers, office, library, cafeteria, gymnasium, track, football/soccer field, baseball/softball field, and swimming pool. It also boasts the mural "Malama Mea Ola" (Protect All Living Things) by Judy Kawabata. Built on a series of hills, the beautiful open-air campus has a lot of stairs. The driveway leading up to the school is lined with large palm trees, a distinctive feature of the campus, and leads uphill, directly towards Koko Head, a dormant volcano, which is featured on the seal.

Curriculum

The school's curriculum emphasizes college preparation and incorporates the Hawaiokinai Content and Performance Standards as well as national content standards.

Notable aspects of the school include: a School Community Council; comprehensive athletic and non-athletic co-curricular activities, the latter particularly focusing on community service; student government and leadership classes; an athletic complex, serving both the local community and the state; a Communications Arts & Technology learning center; Project Hookinaolokahi, a program working in conjunction with the Polynesian Voyaging Society; Air Force JROTC; AP and Honors courses; a strong music program, the well-traveled Kaiser Cougars Band and Orchestra; a comprehensive four-year Guidance Program; and, stringent code-of-conduct, student discipline, and attendance policies.

Alma Mater

The musical composition was written by Emmett Yoshioka, a local musician involved in community theatre, and the following lyrics to the Henry J. Kaiser High School Alma Mater were written by an alumnus:

Notable Alumni

*Sid Fernandez, left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball from 1983–1997. Sometimes known as "El Sid", he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, and Houston Astros. His best years were with the Mets from 1984–1993 and he was an integral part of the 1986 World Series championship team.
*Rich Miano, two-time all-Western Athletic Conference pick during his college career at the University of Hawaiokinai, Miano was drafted in the sixth round by the New York Jets in 1985 and enjoyed an 11-year career in the National Football League. Currently in his eighth season as an assistant coach on the UH Warrior football staff, Miano has coached seven all-WAC selections in six seasons at UH.
*Clay Stanley, former indoor volleyball player at the University of Hawaiokinai, Olympic gold medalist (2008)
*Chad Rowan, better known as Akebono, became the first non-Japanese wrestler ever to reach yokozuna, the highest rank in Sumo, on January 27, 1993.
*Claudia Vasquez, member of the music group Sunland, best-known for their 1996 hit single "We Are Only Human".
*Megan Ward, actress best known for her numerous credits in science fiction and horror movies and television series such as Party of Five, Summerland, and Boomtown.
*Jon Yamasato, local entertainer, perhaps best known as a member of the band "Pure Heart", along with Jake Shimabukuro and Lopaka Colon.

*The school maintains a healthy rivalry with fellow East Honolulu high school, the Kalani High School Falcons.
