Niu Valley first opened its doors in 1955 with just the seventh grade and a staff of only six members. Since then, it has grown from one building to 15 and now accommodates approximately 800 students each year. Up until 1974, the school served 7th to 9th graders, but with the construction of Kaiser High School, all ninth graders were moved to the high school level.
Niu Valley is proud to continuously demonstrate high academic achievement. Through the cooperation of students, faculty, and staff, they strive to ensure a safe, healthy, and positive learning environment that nurtures young minds and encourages development. The school's outstanding curriculum and student activities program, which incorporates grade level teams, an advisee-advisor program, exploratory courses, intramural and extramural athletics, and a variety of co-curricular activities, involves the entire school population working together to make a difference. Niu Valley belongs to the Kaiser complex which also includes Kaiser High, Kamiloiki Elementary, and Koko Head Elementary. The school was most recently accredited in 2010 by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges for a period of three years.
Niu Valley's vision is: "Preparing students with the mind and character to be self-reliant, reflective and compassionate young adults in a global community." It was the first public middle school in Hawaiʻi to be authorized to deliver the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).
The Friends of Niu Valley provides a vital parent/community support and advisory role toward Niu Valley Middle School improvement efforts. The school's School/Community-Based Management (SCBM) council actively addresses the school's vision and mission statement through its collaborative efforts toward school improvement, renewal, and educational reform.
