- Israel Arts and Science Academy
The Israel Arts and Science Academy ( _he. התיכון הישראלי למדעים ואומנויות), or IASA for short, is a high school for gifted students in Jerusalem, Israel. IASA is a boarding school with students from all over Israel. The school was founded in 1990 by the Society for Excellence through Education. Approximately 200 students live and study in IASA. Students get accepted to the school as either Science, Music or Visual Art students, though they study most subjects (those which are not related to their area of expertise) in mixed classes. The science students choose between studying either physics, chemistry or biology. The unique department of Music in IASA was shaped by the vision of 3 important educators: the Israeli composer and ethnomusicologist Andre Hajdu (student of Kodaly, Olivier Messiaen and Milhaud), as well as the composer and outstanding educator Michael Wolpe and the worldwide famous teacher of Ear-Training, Bat Sheva Rubinstein. During the years, the Music department produced a remarkable generation of young Israeli musicians, different from the mainstream of the Israeli music scene. The studies in the Art Department consist of painting, sculpting, photography and video art classes. The students also study the modern and classic history of art. In their second year, the students write their own academic paper about any art topic they choose. In their third year, the students work on their final practical exhibit.
