Satanus (comics)

Satanus is a fictional Tyrannosaurus rex that appears as a recurring character in Judge Dredd and other series in 2000 AD beginning in the Jan 1977 issue.

He first appeared in The Cursed Earth epic set in the year 2100. After dying in the Cretaceous era his DNA had been found and he had been cloned for the Dinosaur National Park. Unfortunately the Atomic Wars set the creature loose. The plot line of the Dinosaur National Park was used 12 years later by Michael Chrichton on his novel Jurassic Park (1990).

He later re-appeared in Judge Dredd with a recurring storyline "Blood of Satanus" as well as in Nemesis the Warlock Book V and even got his own eponymous story, Satanus Unchained!. Blood of Satanus II and Blood of Satanus III: The Tenth Circle both concern attempts to raise Satanus from Hell, with the latter involving a demonic invasion of Mega-City One. He was finally killed by Judge Dredd.

Satanus' family members

Relatives of Satanus have played major roles in story arcs in other 2000 AD series:

  • Old One Eye, the mother of Satanus, appeared in Flesh Book 1 in the late Cretaceous.
  • Golgatha, the son of Satanus, born before his father escaped into the Cursed Earth, appeared in the ABC Warriors story of the same name.
