Mario L. Edwards (born December 1, 1975 in Gautier, Mississippi) is a retired American Football cornerback. He was drafted in the sixth round (180th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He played college football at Florida State University. He also has a son Mario Edwards Jr. who is a star Defensive End at Denton Ryan High School in Denton, TX
In his career, he has played for the Dallas Cowboys, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Miami Dolphins of the NFL. Edwards went to Florida State where he starred early at cornerback.
College career
He was considered a top prospect towards the end of his junior year, but a poor performance in the 1998 Fiesta Bowl combined with injuries and inconsistent play his senior season saw his stock drop on draft boards.
Professional career
Edwards was drafted in the sixth round (180th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Cowboys, becoming a full time starter in 2002. While with the Cowboys, he started 47 games and was part of the statistically ranked number one overall defense in 2003. In 2004, Edwards signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent and spent only one season with the team. In 2005, he signed with the Miami Dolphins after the possibility of trading Patrick Surtain to the Kansas City Chiefs, which eventually happened. Edwards would be released prior to the beginning of the season.
