railway station inMelbourne , Victoria,Australia , located in the township of Sunbury, on the Melbourne - Bendigo railway. The station is staffed during daylight hours for most train services until approximately 8pm most nights, and is at the end ofMetcard Zone 2, being the terminus of Sunbury Line services.Facilities
The station is located between Horne Street and Brook Street, with shops are located near the station. A footbridge is located at the down end of the station, whilst a disused water tower is adjacent to platform 2. Even though Sunbury is part of Zone 2 it is still operated by
V/Line and like many other regional stations it features the newViclink style signs.The station consists of two
side platform s. Platform 1 has a large weatherboard building with an enclosed waiting room and a ticket office inside, while platform 2 is occupied by a small shelter with a ticket validator. A largeMetcard machine is located at the front of the building on platform 1, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. Sunbury station opened on Thursday,
10 February 1859 as a terminus, the line not being extended north for two more years. The three track yard dated back from this time, and was unique in Victoria. Properinterlocking of the signals and point work did not exist until 1981, and the station was not fully interlocked until 1998 when aSolid State Interlocking was provided. The layout of the station was again altered with the Regional Fast Rail works in the 2000s.Sources
