Roads of Ashland, Kentucky

Roads of Ashland, Kentucky

Two U.S. highways and numerous state highways serve the city of Ashland, Kentucky directly, while an interstate and a U.S. highway serve the city indirectly.

Interstates

* Interstate 64 does not serve Ashland directly, however, it is listed as a major control city in Kentucky. It has two interchanges at milepost 185 and 191 for KY 180 and US 23 respectively.

U.S. highways

Three federal highways enter Ashland or come very close to it.

* US 23 (also known as Corridor B according to the ADHS) enters from the northwest at Westwood and crosses over a hill-to-valley viaduct into downtown Ashland. It diverges to Greenup Avenue, with Winchester Avenue becoming Business US 23 at 7th Street. Business US 23 reconnects to US 23 southeast near 35th Street. US 23 is also concurrent with US 60 from 11th Street southeast to the Catlettsburg city line.
** In three separate projects between 1971 and 1972, the US 23/US 60 concurrency was widened from two to four-lanes. This included Greenup Avenue and Winchester Avenue east to Catlettsburg "A history of Ashland, Kentucky, 1854-2004." Ashland Bicentennial Committee. 2004. 2 Jan., 2007.]
** Business US 23, or US 23X, is also known as Winchester Avenue between the divergence of US 23 at Greenup Avenue at both ends. It is 1.796 miles in length.
** US 23 Spur, or US 23S, is the Simeon Willis Memorial Bridge.
* US 60 enters from the south at Boy Scout Road and continues north to Winchester Avenue. It then utilizes 10th and 11th Streets to overlap US 23 to the Catlettsburg city line.
** US 60 (13th Street) was widened from the entrance to the Tuberculosis Hospital to downtown Ashland in 1955 .
** In 1971, 12th and 13th Street were widened and slightly realigned between Oakview Avenue and Lexington Avenue ; the 12th Street alignment extended to Winchester Avenue. Both carry US 60 and was completed as a transportation enhancement project, however, only 12th Street connected directly to the Ben Williamson Bridge.
** In 1977, US 60 south of the city to Interstate 64 (via Kentucky Route 180) was widened to four-lanes.
** Construction began in 1981 , which coincided with other widening and straightening projects along 12th and 13th Streets in Ashland. During the same year, 13th Street was straightened from Blackburn Avenue to Oakview Avenue, connecting to segments widened and realigned in 1971.
* US 52, in Ohio, does not enter the city, however, it has an interchange with the twin Ashland Bridges. The Ben Williamson Memorial Bridge and the Simeon Willis Memorial Bridge provide access to and from Ashland into Ohio.

State highways

* KY 5 never enters the city limits of Ashland, however does serve a sizable area surrounding the city.
* KY 168 crosses through the south Ashland region and is referred to as Blackburn Avenue and South Belmont Street.
* KY 766 Connects US 60 and 13th Street with KY 5
* KY 1012 is known as Boy Scout Road.
