“Sugar” is one of two tracks originally included on “The BLACK Bootleg” that remained after the EP was realized into a full length conceptual piece re-titled “Fever +Fetish”; the other track being “The Second Drowning.” Inspired by trip hop artists like Tricky and Massive Attack as well as Old School hip-hop of the 1980’s from the likes of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Khanoda produced several ambiguously titled mixes of “Sugar” for the CD Single, using sample driven melodies and bass heavy rhythms to translate the song’s equally cryptic lyrics that include lines in its verses like “David‘s on my case again, said I wounded his funny friend, that was last position, Matthew‘s in the lake pissin’” and “force it might ‘til the roof caves in on my tongue” before concluding in each chorus “I said my peace so love me.”
Originally recorded in 1996 with engineer Greg Wolinski, who also worked with Khanoda on the EP, 1997‘s “603 muv” (which was initially released as a precursor to “Fever +Fetish”) Khanoda took on engineering duties when in January 2002 he re-recorded and remixed “Sugar” and enlisted a female vocalist, singer/songwriter Lisa Derrick, to sing background on several of the mixes including the “Glugs +Dramour” remix which Derrick performs lead vocals.
“Sugar” had its official debut when on May 28, 2003 several mixes from those sessions in 2002 were premiered for one day over at khanodasugar.com; a single specific site which launched in September 2002 and includes an audio biography, a first of its kind for any artist website. The site received 28,922 hits by fans wanting to get a taste of "Sugar."
Since the 2002 sessions, several mixes of “Sugar” were taken back to the studio in early 2006 for “tweaking” in addition to laying down new vocals. Although not specified, it is speculated that Lisa Derrick’s vocals were removed from all the tracks and replaced by another female vocalist. The “Ethereal Blow“ mix remains at this time to be the version of “Sugar“ that will be included on “Fever +Fetish.” [http://www.khanoda.com]
